I grew up in Davenport Iowa, where Isabel Bloom had her original cement sculpture shop and everyone had her creations in their yards. The pieces are sweet and whimsical using Mississippi river stones as accents. This was the seed leading to my love of working with clay. My education in ceramics began in Oakland, California, long ago at a junior college with a friend. I spent many hours on the wheel making functional pieces and enjoying the feeling of clay in my hands. Working with clay is a lesson in patience. I learned not to force the creative process. When I had taken all the wheel classes allowed, It was a natural step to sign up for sculpture instruction. My instructors, Susannah Israel and Jennifer Brazelton were inspiring and made it fun. I enjoy working with clay and creating pieces with my hands that are born out of nothing. The shapes and blobs eventually become forms and then objects. It is very gratifying to experience the art of creation, and to share that experience with others is deeply satisfying. When working with clay, imagination becomes possibilities and possibilities become art. I currently belong to The Wedge in Reno, Nevada, where I can fire and glaze my artwork made on my wheel or sculpted in my garage. It is a true creative journey.
“Make believe it’s true, and it could be… Make believe it’s true and we’ll have lot’s of fun…Make believe it’s true because this is what I’m going to do… Make clay: and tell a story, for you.” - Isabel Bloom
